Profiles of self-directed learners who've followed their interests to success

“A Sound Life” film ’20: Crowdfunding Post

I make short documentaries about self-taught learners who’ve followed an interest to success — charismatic people who have become experts in their field. Whatever the subject is that drew them in, that’s what I seek to learn more about. Once the film is made, I try to give it exposure by submitting it to film festivals and distributing it to nonprofits, ultimately to inspire viewers to pursue their own interests.

My current documentary is “A Sound Life”. It’s scheduled for release in ’20.

About the Film

“A Sound Life” film chronicles Richard Beggs journey into the field of sound and why sound in film is so important. Richard Beggs followed his interest in fine art painting, classical music and music recording, to work in sound for film. He received an Academy Award on his very first film, “Apocalypse Now.” “A Sound Life” includes behind-the-scenes nitty-gritty footage and candid interviews with award-winning leading film industry professionals such as Director’s Sofia Coppola, Barry Levinson, Walter Murch, Gary Rydstrom, Randy Thom, Lora Hirschberg, and Skip Lievsay who add to America’s film history about post-production sound for film.

Kristin Sherman Olnes, director of “A Sound Life.”

What’s Next

With production nearing completion, I’m currently accepting private and corporate donations for production costs including: attorney’s fees, music licensing costs, sound-editing honorarium, tests screenings, DCP copies, and festival entries.

Ultimately, my film is intended to be screened, followed by discussion questions, at non-profits, particularly those with media programs. Art museums needing intellectual content for donors and would benefit from screenings. Public libraries could make this unknown aspect of  filmmaking available to the public.

Ultimately my hope is that “A Sound Life” will inspire women and people of color to seek work in this currently white-dominated male film profession.

For people who want to make a tax-deductible donation, scroll through the pledge offerings below. Than click this link A Sound Life_film  to get to my secure donation page. (The money I raise is managed by the non-profit, The San Francisco Study Center, my fiscal sponsor.)

Where can we see this? I knew Richard years ago when I worked at Zoetrope. I’d love to see this sometime.

      Hi artiques!

Nice of you to comment and follow my blog. When did you work at Zoetrope? What did you do there? I worked there too in ’89-’90.

I’m currently in post production on my film about sound designer / mixer, Richard Beggs. I just finished writing the script for the film. I’ve got all the footage organized and now I’m finally ready to put it together–which will take some time. I’ve been working on it independently for five years!

Since you’re following this blog now, you’ll find out when it’s completed. I tend to post film updates on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Feel free to follow the Facebook page for the film, “A Sound Life” at or the twitter account is:

Thanks again for inquiring. Now I’m very curious… I wonder if I know you?

      Best Regards,

      Kristin Sherman Olnes

    Dear Anne,

Thanks for dropping in. Your comments are intriguing. Yes, of course a trailer! It’s in the works. I decided to run my own crowdfunding campaign via my website before the trailer was completed. Raising money was required for a BAVC grant I worked very hard on but didn’t get unfortunately–although I’ve raised $ which is plus! I thought I had a good chance at that grant because it was aimed at newcomers, but they went with people who have already achieved success in previous work. Also, social justice films are primarily what is being funded and my film only meets that criteria indirectly, because my subject provided women a gateway into the male dominated field of post sound work, by only hiring and training female assistants for over forty years.

I’ll definatly post information about “Richard Beggs: A Sound Life” on Women in Film’s ‘Chicks Chat’–once I have a trailer. It would be a great fit for #womenfilmmakers (one of my primary target audiences for the film). I’d love to discuss licensing music and clips, if you’re interested.
